More than 1,000 people stood in line Friday to get free marijuana seeds, plants and edible marijuana treats.

The organizers of the giveaway said they did it as a response to the growing tension between police departments and communities across the country. An organizer who goes by the name Scroger and posts digital videos in which he talks about the benefits of marijuana said the diverse makeup of the people who attended the giveaway proves it.

“I know there are a lot of frustrated people out there, but cannabis does heal and brings smiles to people’s faces, and that’s what I tried to do today,” he said.

The diversity of the crowd was not lost on those standing in line.

“The community is strong and everyone helps each other and it’s a beautiful thing right now,” Jemal Anderson said.

“It’s just a reflection of the overwhelming support that this was voted in,” Charles Osborne said.

While it’s legal for adults to have small amounts of marijuana and smoke it in private in D.C., it’s still against the law to sell or buy it. So adults who want to smoke pot in D.C. either have to grow their own or have someone who does grow pot give it to them.

“You are legally able to grow your own medicine. That’s the key and that’s what we’re pushing to show,” said Carlos, aka “The Green Thumb.” “It’s easy and fulfilling.”

Organizers also collected donations for autism research at Friday’s event.
